Sun Valley Junior Hockey is proud to offer two programs for girls in the Wood River Valley who want to experience the thrill and excitement of ice hockey. The begining program is for girls 5th grade and younger. At this age, they play co-ed, and with the assistance of both male and female coaches, they learn many skills and are exposed to a few competitive games, but the main focus is mostly on having fun and learning about sportsmanship. For the older girls, grades 6th through 12th, a full program is available with twice weekly practices and several tournaments.

The travel team practices twice a week with an additional night available for game play. Last season, we were lucky to have John Miller and Nancy Parsons Brown as parent coachs to volunteer their time both with practices and tournaments. This is the first chance skaters get at competitive hockey. Even still, the emphasis is on fun, teamwork and sportsmanship. The basic fundmentals of hockey are reinforced, with a large amount of time spent on playing positions properly, puck handling and developing skating skills. At this level youth hockey does not permit checking, however, the game does become more physical as the speed and ability of the skaters increases. There are 4-5 travel tournaments at this age, and one home tournament during the winter season.

This year the team had their second winning season and were second at both State and Regionals.
